Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science!
Our Department
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science seeks to provide students with experiences that will assist them in defining their life and career objectives. Course offerings, advising and day-to-day contact with faculty and other students contribute to this goal. The courses provide the necessary background to allow students to pursue graduate work, teach secondary school, obtain employment in government and industry and acquire mathematical tools for use in the physical, social, life and management sciences. The Department also functions as a service unit for the entire University, teaching such mathematics courses, as other departments deem necessary for their programs. In addition to the students’ academic development, the Department provides an intellectual environment for fostering personal development, interpersonal skills and self-understanding. These goals reflect the Department’s philosophy that our primary reason for being is to foster the intellectual growth and development of the students.
Our Faculty
The Department faculty members are active and dedicated scholars with an enthusiastic interest in both teaching and research. They choose to be at Oakwood University for the purpose of providing the nurturing educational environment in which each student can thrive and become his or her best self. Innovative teaching methods are integrated through out the mathematics and computer science curriculum.
Our Students
Our students are warm and friendly and work together as a group to support and encourage each other to be diligent and persistent in reaching their career goals. Many of the majors in the Department obtain summer internships with leading corporations. This on-the-job experience allows them to make valuable decisions concerning the type of job to pursue upon graduation. During the academic year, majors may be employed as tutors, readers, researchers or lab assistants by the faculty of the Department. These responsibilities afford the opportunity to assimilate and better internalize the material that has been studied. They also teach responsibility and promote the development of a good work ethic. Departmental graduates have transitioned quite successfully into the job market or into graduate school.
Career Opportunities
Careers available in mathematics are (1) in teaching: the public or private school system, the junior or community college system, and the college or university system; and (2) in industry: computer mathematician, operations researcher, statistician, classical engineering assistant, actuarial training, surveying assistant, research, clerical accounting, and cartography.
A degree in computer science will provide opportunities in teaching, industry, and government. Several firms employ persons to design and write programs for computer users. Computer manufacturers are major employers of well-trained computer scientists. A graduate degree in computer science or mathematics provides more opportunities in teaching and research.
This department is under the division of Academic Affairs.
