Welcome to the Oakwood University Department of History! It is the Purpose of the Department of History to prepare students to use the discipline of history as an analytical tool to understand the dynamics of today’s ever changing and complex society. Students are expected to synthesize an interpretive knowledge base from their course work, independent study and research. From this interpretive knowledge base, students will distinguish among and show appreciation for a diverse world of cultural institutions. Finally, students will have opportunity to exemplify, in their personal life styles, the spiritual and ethical values offered through their education in the Department of History.
Graduates of the History Department will be able to think critically and solve problems they face in every day life. The Department is especially proud of the fact that over 90% of our pre-law students not only get into law school but also pass the Bar. This we feel comes from the fact that the department does an outstanding job of making its graduates thinkers and problem solvers of the highest caliber.
Many graduates in history attend law school; others choose graduate school for careers in teaching and research. They may also find rewarding careers in governmental agencies such as the Department of State, the Diplomatic Corps, private industry, foundations, archives, and criminal justice organizations.
This department is under the division of Academic Affairs.
