Last April, Oakwood University's campus lost power for many days after a tornado swept through Huntsville. Because of that the alumni chapter is raising funds to install a new generator.
That news is going over very well with students. The Alumni Association is working on raising $300,000 to purchase an industrial sized generator that will provide power to the dorms and the cafeteria so workers can prepare food for students during severe weather.
Oakwood student Hawah Syeh said, "So I think it would be real good if we do get this generator to supply our campus with electricity." Student David Moore adds, "I think this is a good idea, with [a] generator power you can charge up phones because we're kids and we like our cellular devices."
Dr. Leslie Pollard, Oakwood President, says, "Well, for one we wouldn't be dependant upon the city power grid. Number two, also in terms of health and safety we could light the dorms."
Administrators tell us the Alumni Chapter is using social media like Twitter and Facebook to help raise the money.
