A nationally syndicated columnist with Creators Syndicate, Martin is the author of Listening to the Spirit Within: 50 Perspectives on Faith and "Speak Brother! A Black Man's View of America." He originally reported "The First: President Barack Obama's Road to the White House. Martin is a commentator for the TV One Cable Network and host and managing editor of "Washington Watch with Roland Martin," a one-hour Sunday morning news show. He has won more than 30 professional awards for journalistic excellence, including a regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television News Directors.
Martin's appearance on April 3 is to relaunch the "Sharpen Your Mind Lecture Series" (formerly known as the "Open Your Mind Lecture Series"). The male residential life coordinators were given the challenge of developing intellectually-stimulating programming for the male students at Oakwood University. The colossal response to author and speaker Dr. Michael Eric Dyson let to the creation of the lecture series in 2009.
The mission of the series is to support quality education at Oakwood University by providing extracurricular learning opportunities through presentations by those individuals who are intellectually intact. Oakwood University is one of only a few HBCUs with such a lecture series.
The program is free and open to the public.
