Oakwood Simulates Dorm Room Burn
Huntsville, Ala. — Oakwood University will hold a simulated residence hall room burn at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, to demonstrate the safety precautions that should be taken in the event of a dorm room fire. This will be the first major fire safety exercise this semester on Oakwood’s campus and will take place on the bridge leading from Oakwood University Church to Wade Hall.
The Huntsville Fire Department, local business partners, and the campus faculty, staff, and students will gather on the asphalt, close to the OU church, to observe as Oakwood’s Physical Plant department constructs a mock dorm room (1/4 scale) that will be furnished with a desk, computer, chair, wastebasket, curtain, bookcase, smoke detector, etc. The simulated dorm room will have a floor, walls, ceiling, and an open face. The room will be rolled to the specified location and a fire will be started in the wastebasket.
The Huntsville Fire Department will extinguish the fire once the room becomes totally engulfed with flames. Fire department representatives will demonstrate the proper use of fire extinguishers in such an event, and allow students to participate. Refreshments will be provided by area business partners. This exercise is intended to raise fire safety awareness relevant to how quickly a room can become engulfed in smoke and flames and how to safely handle such campus emergencies.
