Junior Achievement in a Day
Huntsville, Ala. — Oakwood University has partnered with SAIC/UNITeS to lead out in classroom instruction at Lincoln Elementary School on Tuesday, November 25, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., as part of the Junior Achievement of Northern Alabama’s (JANA) JA in a Day program. A group of about a dozen administrators and staff members will coordinate with JANA to offer classes that will introduce business to K-6 students.
JA in a Day is a special Junior Achievement delivery method that facilitates the partnership between businesses and elementary schools. Like all Junior Achievement programs, business volunteers involved in this program help to educate and inspire youth about free enterprise, business, and economics. This also opens the door for schools to establish a relationship with local companies and their employees. SAIC/UNITeS volunteers donate their time in the fall and spring to take a break from the average work day and spend it in the classrooms.
What Oakwood University professionals will be doing Tuesday is implementing the tailor-made lesson plans, one-hour training, and materials they’ve received through JANA to engage Lincoln Elementary School students in the classroom. In keeping with the JANA motto, Oakwood administration and staff members will seek to “Share [their] success to inspire young people to reach their full potential.” In so doing, the Oakwood team, which includes university president and first lady Delbert and Susan Baker, hopes to encourage a supportive relationship among educational professionals at Oakwood University and Lincoln Elementary while having fun with the students.
