Oakwood Recognized for Positive Relationship with SAIC
Oakwood University received the HBCU/MI Award of the Year at SAIC’s annual Small Business Reception held at the McLean Conference Center in McLean, Virginia. Approximately 80 businesses, including heads of corporations, line managers, business development and procurement managers were in attendance. Oakwood was recognized for its positive and successful partnership with SAIC and as a model for other HBCU/MI’s involved in corporate relationships. Accepting the award were Dr. Delbert Baker, President and Mrs. Marcia Burnette, Assistant VP for Advancement and Development.
In 2004, Oakwood University (OU) became a subcontractor to SAIC through NASA’s UNITeS contract. This partnership has developed into a very positive and dynamic relationship that has provided internships, part-time and summer employment, and scholarships for our students. In addition, this affiliation has resulted in job opportunities for HBCU students in the various fields of technology.
As we launch into the new year, we anticipate further growth as we begin our three-year Mentor-Protégé Agreement with SAIC through NASA. Some of strengths and benefits of the Agreement are that Oakwood will be provided expertise in contract management and technology enhancement, and SAIC will have an opportunity to be exposed to faculty in research, as well as finance in a university environment.
For the past four years, SAIC has been a sponsor for the annual OU/UNCF (United Negro College Fund) campaign. Oakwood University is looking forward to a continuing relationship with SAIC and NASA
