Another Soldier Rests

We regret to announce the passing of Chaplain Joseph T. Powell, who served as Chaplain and assistant professor of Religion at Oakwood College in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Chaplain Powell’s other civilian responsibilities included pastoring in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina, and Los Angeles, California. In total he gave 39 years of service to the Seventh-day Adventist ministry; for 23 of those years he also served his country in the United States Army.
Although he had traveled the world during this career, Chaplain Powell most recently lived with his wife in Orange County, California. After another day of singing his favorite hymns, and reciting his favorite Scriptures, Chaplain Powell peacefully passed away, near sunset, on Friday, August 21, 2009. He was a steadfast soldier of service to his country, his church, his family and, above all, to his God.
Chaplain Powell’s legacy will extend beyond his time on this earth. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife Alice Pettiford Powell; his daughters Cynthia Powell-Hicks and JoAnne Powell Lightford; two sons-in-law, Calvin Hicks and Daryl Lightford; five grand children Allycin Powell-Hicks, Shelby Powell-Hicks, Ross Lightford, Kyndall Powell-Hicks and Reid Lightford; and a legion of friends and colleagues.
Funeral services will be held on Sabbath, August 29, at the Kansas Avenue SDA Church in Riverside, California. A public viewing is scheduled for 2:00 pm, immediately followed by the funeral service at 3:00 pm.
