As a tie-in to Social Work Month, Heart Gallery Alabama and Oakwood University have partnered to raise awareness of adoption and foster parenting. Heart Gallery Alabama’s goal is “to raise awareness of adoption and foster parenting to help each of the over 240 children, in the permanent legal custody of the state of Alabama, find their own “forever family.”
An information session and reception was held in the Smart Room of the Eva B. Dykes Library at Oakwood University on Thursday, March 25. Paulette Johnson, Library Director, said the “standing room only” crowd indicated that the information session “was a great success. Several families from the community attended, and the Social Work Department really supported the event.”
Heart Gallery Alabama also has an exhibit on the first floor of the library through April 4, which artistically displays pictures of the hardest group of children to be adopted: older children whose ages range from 5 to 18. The pictures in the exhibit reflect the smiles, laughs, and passion coming from children of various backgrounds who daily yearn for love and hugs, but more importantly a family and place to call their own.
