OU Social Work Professor Selected to Write for North American Licensing Exams

Huntsville social worker Octavio Ramirez has been selected to serve in the North American network of subject matter experts who write test questions for the social work licensing examinations used in the United States and Canada.

Ramirez is Associate Professor of Social Work at Oakwood University in Huntsville. He is a Licensed Certified Social Worker – Private Independent Practice in Alabama.

Ramirez will be writing questions designed to be used on the examinations administered by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). He was chosen from applicants across the United States and Canada, and participated in a writer training session held in Arlington, Virginia in June.

The ASWB examinations are designed to measure entry-to-practice competency of social workers. A passing score on an ASWB is a requirement for licensure at one or more levels of practice in 49 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia. Two Canadian provinces—Alberta and British Columbia—use the ASWB examinations to certify clinical social workers. About 31,000 ASWB examinations are given each year.
