Oakwood Hosts Alumni and Friends for Homecoming 2002
March 28-31, 2002, Easter weekend, marked the annual return of Oakwood alumni and friends for Alumni Homecoming Weekend. The occasion offers an opportunity to renew friendships, recover memories, and show loyalty for the alma mater. As always, the weekend was filled with challenging devotionals, fun social events, and professional and class get-togethers.
Featured speakers were: Elder Timothy Nixon, chaplain at Andrews University, who spoke for vespers; Elder Ezra Mendinghall, minority affairs director for the Pacific Union, who spoke for Sabbath divine worship; and Dr. Jessie Wilson, who spoke for divine worship for the youth. Elder E. E. Cleveland spoke at the Forum service.
The annual awards meeting was held in the Business and Technology Complex, and the following persons were recognized: Parents of the Year, Elder and Mrs. Ronald Edmonds; Alumna of the Year, Udell Darville; Alumnus of the Year, Elder Ralph Peay; Certificates of Merit, Cecelia Reid, Nellie Connor, Russell Jordan, Doris Patterson Brown, Juanita Mitchell, Elder Lloyd Mitchell, and Ollie Belle Hatcher.
Our hearts were saddened by the death of Thamar Desilier, a young Oakwoodite, in a car accident on a rain-soaked expressway. Our prayers are with the family of the young lady and with another Oakwoodite who was injured and taken to the hospital.
Thanks to Ed Woods, national alumni director, and Elder Sherman Cox, Homecoming 2002 coordinator, and all members of the team who made this a successful Alumni Homecoming Weekend. We hope to see our Oakwood alumni and friends next year for Homecoming 2003.
