Campus Family Meets for 2001 Colloquium
On August 8-10, 2001, the faculty, staff, and administration came together for the annual Colloquium, an annual retreat just before the new school year that allows for devotionals, seminars, exchanges of ideas, and general togetherness just prior to the beginning of the school year.
Dr. Andy Lampkin, an ethicist and assistant professor in the Religion and Theology Department, presented the morning devotionals. On Wednesday, Aug. 8, Dr. Jeff Howard, president of the Efficacy Institute, presented a seminar entitled "Achieving Professional and Personal Effectiveness." His research has indicated that each student is teachable and that an educator should not give up on anyone.
Thursday, Aug. 9, was a busy day as Dr. Baker gave his state-of -the institution address. Then Womack Rucker, Jr., vice president of the Adventist Health System, presented a seminar entitled "Share Yourself," in which he urged attendees to show civility to all
persons who patronize their institution.
Friday, Aug. 10, we heard from Colonel Leon Schenck, deputy chief of the Huntsville, Alabama, Police Department. He spoke on ways OC can help promote community safety. Then Dr. Helen McAlpine, president of J. F. Drake State Technical College, addressed the attendees. She spoke of the challenges of leading a technical institution and ways Oakwood and Drake might work together.
Plenty of information and updates were presented to the assembled OC family. At the close, everyone formed a circle around the auditorium and joined hands in a symbolic gesture of togetherness and commitment in making this school year a great and productive time for OC's students.
