Cadet Elected as Class President at Law Enforcement Academy

The Northeast Alabama Law Enforcement Academy announced that OU Police Officer Jimmie Rogers was elected by 95 of his classmates as president of the 155th Basic Police Academy class.  This is historic because Rogers is the first police officer from an institution of higher learning to be elected class president in the academy’s recent history.  This honor usually goes to a police officer from a larger metropolitan police department.  

Rogers said that he was “overwhelmed and surprised. God never ceases to amaze me with the way He blesses me and uses me for His glory. Please continue to pray that God endows me with His love and wisdom to be the leader this class needs.”

Officer Rogers, who formerly worked as a state trooper in Texas, entered the academy in January as required by Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission regulations for police officer licensing.  He will undergo 480 hours of comprehensive training on search and seizure, defensive tactics and the use of firearms. Lewis Eakins, Director of Public Safety says, “We are extremely proud of Officer Rogers and his election, which projects a positive image for our department and the institution.”   

As class president, Rogers is now tasked with working with his cabinet members, deciding upon a class seal, raising funds for a class gift, and preparing a speech to be made during commencement services on March 29, 2012.  Other duties include calling his classmates to order for daily inspections, occupying the first position seat in each class, leading out in class training events, and other related duties.
