HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- On Valentine's Day 2007, Huntsville vocalist Kathy Yolanda Rice sent her 1,000-plus MySpace friends a Valentine's Day message via the social media site.
Actor Philip Michael Thomas, of "Miami Vice" fame, was one of those MySpace friends.
"I got a (MySpace) message back from him saying how much he loved my voice and that was the beginning of our friendship on MySpace," Rice said. "I didn't realize he was a musician as well, and he directed me to his page and I got a chance to listen and I think the first one was entitled 'All My Love,' and I enjoyed it so much and thought, 'Wow, this guy writes some really cool music and has a beautiful voice.' And we started a creative exchange of music and poetry."
This led to Thomas and Rice's recording of the gospel ballad "Flesh of My Flesh." The track features smooth-jazz textures and silky vocal performances.
"Flesh of My Flesh" is actually from a musical called "Emanuel," which Thomas co-wrote with Archbishop Abuna Nathaniel Salem of the Ethiopian Coptic Church of North and South America. The song's lyrics were inspired by the love between Jesus' earthly parents, Mary and Joseph.
